News report:

Comments: U2 perform at Dreamfest, the annual concert that's part of the Dreamforce conference put on by last year's Innocence + Experience tour sponsor, Salesforce. It's also a charity show that raises an estimated $10 million for the UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospitals.

The show takes place in the parking lot of the Cow Palace, a venue the band last played in 1987. U2 uses at least some of the same staging that was used during the outdoor Vertigo tour in 2006 -- including the appearance of two b-stages that curve out into the audience. High above the main stage is a sign that says "Geneva Theater," a reference to the movie theater that used to sit on this spot. Unofficial estimates peg the attendance at 40,000 people, almost all of whom are Dreamforce conference attendees -- not your typical U2 audience.

As they did on last year's Innocence + Experience tour, U2 takes the stage to Patti Smith's "People Have The Power," but most attendees have no idea it's a signal that the show is about to start. After starting with four well-known hits, U2 plays "California" for only the seventh time and begins it with a bit of "California Dreamin'." That's followed by a trio of songs played on the b-stage, including "Every Breaking Wave," which is decicated to Steve Jobs and his wife, Laurene Powell; today's the fifth anniversary of Jobs' death.

"Bullet The Blue Sky" brings back an angry version of U2 that many fans haven't seen in a long time. An extended version of the song includes Bono having a pseudo conversation with U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump for nearly three minutes, refuting some of Trump's statements from recent political rallies. Bono never calls him by name, but addresses him as "candidate." He tells the video Trump that "good people are not gonna stay silent while you run off with the American dream" and shouts "Fortress America!" as Trump chants "Build that wall!" It's a powerful statement that wins loud cheers from the audience and makes news around the world. U2 contrasts Trump by playing "Pride" immediately after and including the well-known video of Martin Luther King telling civil rights advocates in the 1960s, "We as a people will get to the promised land!"

Although the main set was scheduled to end after "One," Bono tells the crowd that the band is going to skip going off-stage and waiting for everyone to cheer their return. Instead they stay on stage and do "Mother And Child Reunion / Where The Streets Have No Name" similarly to how it was done on tour last year. They do take a brief encore break after "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and return to the stage for "40." Bono tries to get the crowd to sing the "how long to sing this song" refrain after the band stops playing, but it doesn't last very long.
