"I think the opposite of love is not hate. It's apathy. You only get angry about things you really care about."

Comments: An emotional show as U2 takes the stage in mourning after the overnight death of Dennis Sheehan, the band's tour manager since the early 1980s. Sheehan was found dead early this morning in his hotel room after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack. Bono mentions Sheehan's death early in the show with a short speech after "I Will Follow."

"The extended family is very important to us, and we look after each other," Bono tells the audience. "It takes a lot to put on a show like tonight. Last night, we lost a member of our family. Dennis Sheehan was his name. He was U2's tour manager for 33 years. He loved, as we all do, the city of Los Angeles. He called the Sunset Marquis his home away from home. And he came to the city as a young man in the '70s working for Led Zeppelin and, in so many ways, he always thought that U2 could be the next Led Zeppelin.

"Anyway," Bono says later, "a lot of U2 songs over the years have been written to fill a void, an absence, a hole in the heart left by a loved one. This next one is one of those. It's for my mother, Iris, who taught me that through the wound, that this kind of thing can be, there's an opening to something fantastic."

Bono recites from Psalm 23 during the transition between "Raised By Wolves" and "Until The End Of The World" -- as he's been doing throughout the tour -- but tonight repeats the final words,  "Comfort me!" multiple times, each one louder and more urgent than the last. As the second set ends, Bono shouts "Goodbye, Dennis Sheehan!" as the band plays the final notes of "With Or Without You."

The show closes with Bono telling the audience how Sheehan used to try to get fans to sing the chorus to "40," and it became their regular closing song. He says tonight's show and the entire tour will be dedicated to Sheehan, and the band launches into the song -- its first performance of the tour. Images of Sheehan show on the video screen throughout the song. The band leaves via the long walkway and e-stage, and the audience loudly continues singing the refrain, "How long to sing this song?" long after they're gone.

Coldplay's Chris Martin is spotted at the show.
